Vida’s Story

Vida Docherty (Nee Pug)

My grandmother was born in 1946, the year after the Second World War ended and even though the fighting had stopped, she had to live on rations the first few years of her life. witch means that VE day did not mark the end of all the terrible things that happened in WWII. The war was still going in Japan and many refused to celebrate until VJ Day (Victory in Japan Day) which was not celebrated until 3 months later when the atomic bombs were dropped on Hiroshima and, 3 days later, Nagasaki. VJ day is celebrated on 15 august 1945 and is the Asian equivelent of VE day. Many people also refused to celebrate because they had lost family members during the fighting. Some children had only met their parents a few times before they died.
