Audrey’s Story

Audrey Gunnell, aged 87

There was a big street party in Wilson Street, the tables were so full I don’t know where all the food came from because people had so little at that time.  I remember everyone going from house to house asking to borrow sugar, milk etc for baking.  There were lots of American soldiers stationed near us, they must have given us food.

There weren’t many men at the party, only those who had been too old or young to go to war, my own Dad didn’t come back for a long time but to be honest he never really came back.  Dunkirk changed him and he was never the same again.

My mother was a train driver during the war, she enjoyed the work and I stepped up to run our home, looking after my younger sister.
