Week Ending 16th November

The college joined together last week to commemorate the centenary of the World War One armistice. The history department delivered a series of special assemblies highlighting the particular significance of this year’s commemoration, which culminated in a moving service on Friday morning including: a student rendition of the Last Post, a two minute silence and a student reading of Lawrence Binyon’s For the Fallen. Many thanks to Esme Sharpington and Peter Aitken for their contributions to this event. Miss Evans was also honoured to represent Chesterton at the service to commemorate the armistice at Westminster Abbey on Sunday evening, an invitation which was received in recognition of the work the college has put in to marking the centenary of World War One over the last four years.

Before half term, the Library took part in a competition organised by Heffers’ Childrens’ department. Over 200 pupils from Chesterton submitted reviews of their favourite books and I am delighted to say that one of our Year 8 pupils, Emilia Rowland, was chosen by Heffers as the winner. She wrote an amazing review of “Tom’s Midnight Garden”. Emilia has won a £50 book token for herself and a copy of each of the Times Recommended Top 100 books for Secondary Schools for the library. This week we welcomed David Robinson, Manager of Heffers, into the Library where he presented Emilia and the Library with our fantastic prizes. Great work Emilia and huge thanks to all those who took part!

The under 16 basketball team have made it two wins from two with a 36-24 victory over Netherhall! The boys rallied in the second half to add some gloss on a close game with some excellent baskets from both teams. Here’s hoping they finish the season unbeaten!

House competitions continue this week with a Harry Potter quiz!! We hope to see as many Potter enthusiasts as possible participating. The quiz standings are very close this year with Robinson and Fawcett neck and neck at the top of the leaderboard… keep doing your revision for the quiz on Friday mornings during tutor time!’

Well done to all the students who performed in our second Teatime Concert of the year, on Tuesday afternoon this week. It was a lovely occasion featuring a variety of solo and duet performances.

Tickets for the St John’s Carol Service, to be held on Thursday 6th December, go on sale on ParentMail today (Friday 16th November). Please see the separate ParentMail sent for further details; if you have any questions please email Miss Wilson (cwilson@chesterton.cambs.sch.uk). Our music ensembles are busily preparing for this festive event and any students still wishing to be involved should see their music teacher.
